Since January 1st 2009 all ceiling fan manufacturers have to test the performance of their ceiling fans and publish the result of the test to the public. By the result of the test, we can determine the best ceiling fan for our needs. In order to choose the best ceiling fan, we have to know the aspects of the ceiling fan test. The first aspect that is measured in efficiency test of ceiling fans is CFMs (Cubic Feet per Minute of Airflow). CFM is the standard measurement for airflow that a ceiling fan can move. The average number for airflow is 5,513 CFM. The second aspect that is also measured in order to know the efficiency of a ceiling fan is the consumption of energy. In this case we use Watts because the energy is electricity. The average consumption for a ceiling fan is 70 Watts. After discovering the two aspects of efficiency, we can find the efficiency number for a ceiling fan. We can get the efficiency number by dividing CFM number by energy number, so we can get 5,513CFM/70 Watts=79. So the average efficiency number is 79. If we need to decide which ceiling fan is good, we need to keep in mind that less Watts is better, and also more CFM is better too. According to a research the lowest energy consumption of belt driven ceiling fans is 30 Watts, and the highest CFM of belt driven ceiling fans is 7500. It could be the best efficiency number of a ceiling fan.

Nowadays many people choose belt driven ceiling fans because of the efficiency rate. The best efficiency rate of a ceiling fan is 250, and belt driven ceiling fans could reach that efficiency rate. So it does make sense if people choose belt driven ceiling fans more than ordinary ceiling fans.
